China-built Uzbek Olympic City project to be the largest sport complex in Central Asia

2024-07-15The Olympic City in Tashkent is the first large-scale collaboration project between China and Uzbekistan that has adopted Chinese standards in terms of design, construction and acceptance.

Upon completion, the Olympic City, built by Sinomach, will be the largest sports complex in Central Asia. Located in the eastern part of the Uzbek capital, the project is undertaken by China CAMC Engineering and designed by its subsidiary China IPPR International Engineering.

The Olympic City project covers a construction area of over 100,000 square meters, including five main sports venues with a capacity of 15,000, along with five indoor and 15 outdoor facilities. It is scheduled to host the Fourth Asian Youth Games and the Fifth Asian Youth Para Games in 2025.

Since its inception, the Olympic City project has garnered significant attention from the leaders of both China and Uzbekistan. Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony in 2022, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev said that the bilateral cooperation on the building of the Olympic City has come from several rounds of investigations and that the project has had historical significance to his country and will become a symbol for Uzbek people to explore their potential and strive for higher sports achievements.

This "super project" showcases modern sports venues built with Chinese technology and expertise and is progressing at a remarkable speed. It will not only promote the development of sport in Uzbekistan, but also strengthen the friendship between the two countries and inject new vitality into the high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative.
