Sinomach's BRI hydropower projects in good progress

(sinomach.com.cn)

The No 1 unit of Broadlands Hydropower Project in Sri Lanka has been put into operation and is performing well. And construction has started on a nearby hydropower project named Broadlands White Hydropower Station.

The two projects are both undertaken by Sinomach affiliate China National Electric Engineering Co Ltd (CNEEC). The Broadlands Hydropower Project is a river-to-river type project and will be built to harness the hydro potential downstream of the existing Polpitiya Power Station. The project will have an installed capacity of 35 megawatts. It is the first large-scale hydropower plant in Sri Lanka to obtain CDM registration.

When operational, the project will greatly relieve the power supply pressure in provinces of central and western Sri Lanka and improve the surrounding ecological environment. It will also boost local tourism and employment.

The Broadlands White Hydropower Station, another hydropower project undertaken by CNEEC, is located at the outlet of the diversion tunnel of the Broadlands Hydropower Project reservoir area, and has a total installed capacity of 4.6 megawatts.

The project is designed to adjust the storage capacity of the Broadlands Hydropower Plant dam area and make full use of the plant's flood discharge to increase power generation, realizing efficient utilization of water resources and enabling local residents to get water conveniently.
