SUMEC Group Corporation (SUMEC), a subsidiary of Sinomach, recently signed two new contracts.

Shipbuilding contract for two vessels

SUMEC Marine Co., Ltd. (SUMEC Marine) has signed a supply contract with Norway-based Grieg Shipowning to build two 65,200 DWT open-hatch gantry crane vessels. The Grieg Group is a leading global shipping company with extensive expertise in open-hatch multipurpose vessels.

Designed with highly maneuverable and efficient gantry cranes and a box-type cargo hold structure, the vessels will feature strong loading versatility.

Capable of running on ammonia fuel, they will be right in line with the global trend to low-carbon shipping and green logistics — representing a key step undertaken by SUMEC Marine to expand beyond its conventional shipbuilding and extend its portfolio into high-value-added vessels.

New solar-storage microgrid project

SUMEC ENERGY Holdings Co., Ltd. (SUMEC Energy) has signed an EPCM contract for a solar-storage microgrid at the Sabwe copper mine in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The project will feature a 71.4 MWp photovoltaic system and a 230 MWh energy storage system.

It will integrate solar power, grid-forming energy storage, grid power and diesel generators — together with advanced technologies including coordinated control of multiple power sources, black start capability and seamless on-grid/off-grid switching.

On completion, it will significantly enhance the power system's autonomous control capability and supply reliability — creating a secure and resilient smart microgrid tailored for the mine. It is expected to deliver over 100 million kWh of clean electricity annually, reducing carbon emissions by approximately 60,000 metric tons per year — achieving goals of cost reduction, carbon abatement and operational stability.

SUMEC Energy will provide full-cycle services including design, procurement, construction management, and operations and maintenance for the project.
