2026-04-07On March 31, the hydropower project located in the upper reaches of the Tatay River in Cambodia successfully completed the closure of its diversion tunnel, officially marking the start of reservoir impoundment. This transition from construction phase to reservoir operation sets the stage for future power generation. The project, invested in and constructed by China National Heavy Machinery Corporation (CHMC), a subsidiary of Sinomach, will focus on controlling the water level rise and enhancing monitoring during the impoundment period to ensure safety.

As a key project under high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, the Upper Tatay Hydropower Station demonstrates CHMC's commitment to the Cambodian market and the cascade development of the Tatay River basin. Located in Koh Kong province, the project has an installed capacity of 150 MW and an average annual generation of 530 million kWh of electricity. Built to high standards with a focus on sustainability and livelihood improvement, it is expected to begin operation later this year.
Once completed, the project will provide stable and clean electricity to Cambodia, addressing the increasing power demand from rapid economic development and supporting local socio-economic growth.
