Geological exploration of the coal yard expansion project for the Lakvijaya Coal-Fired Power Station in Sri Lanka, undertaken by China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC), a subsidiary of Sinomach, was completed on August 14, the last step required to begin project execution.

The project is an extension of a 900 megawatt coal-fired power station in Puttalam district, which is Sri Lanka’s first coal power plant. Plans are to expand the designed storage capacity of the first and second phase coal yards from 740,000 tons to 1,210,000 tons so that coal demands of the power station can be met for six month periods.

Since the preliminary preparation of the project at the end of 2019, and especially in the severe situation of the pandemic at the beginning of this year, the project team actively communicated and cooperated with client representatives, design institutes and construction units, and solved the problems in survey and design, technical schematics, construction schedules and manpower allocation and ensured the smooth progress of geological exploration.
